Everybody played so well and knew exactly what to do and what not to do and there’s this really great feeling that comes out of it that I did not expect at all. I expected some kind of maybe overly-reverent, still kind of playing and it turned out to be so lively, and the music sounded so alive and as I say, it just really held up and the audience got super into it because that stuff is great and they play great. I just feel proud to be a part of it and I love listening while I’m waiting to play.

I sang in a re-creation of The Band’s The Last Waltz last fall and it was one of the best nights of my life. The leader was the musician Sam Cohen, who just put out a solo record last year; he was conducting 30-plus people in 30-plus songs and I was so impressed with how he dealt with people in the setting of music and I knew I wanted to record with him.
